Weekend Wrap Up! - a Getaway to Anchorage, AK
Alright. So obviously this post is late. It's already Thursday and it's looking like I might need a week wrap up instead! Sorry friends, I've been fairly busy and increasingly avoiding sitting down to write. So, the weekend wrap up! I decided to surprise my sister, Kiva, by flying into Anchorage, AK for her birthday. I was there from the 2nd to the 7th ( a bit more than a weekend..:) Turns out, the one person I told that I was coming spilled the beans and Kiva found out. Oh well. We still ended up having a great time.I snuck out Friday morning to get balloons, cake, strawberries and chocolate, etc. All the things you need for a birthday, right? When I got back, she was dressed (finally) and ready to get going. She's so cute. I love her. After all the present opening, we headed downtown for brunch at Snow City - must see/eat in Anchorage - and then hopped on a bus to go thrift shopping. We finally got home at 7 and started making dinner; baked salmon, quinoa and steamed veggies. With good food, wine, chocolate strawberries and a steady flow of people, it turned into a really great night. We spent a good majority of saturday recovering from sleep deprivation. After a late rise, we hit the town, once again and got brunch from Middle Way Cafe - another must see - and spent the rest of the day at a coffee shop. The weekend of Anchorage adventures continued into Sunday when our friend Cody, called me to see if I was still up for skiing. Let it be known. I have never skied before. Ever. What is more terrifying than rocketing down a hill on a pair of sticks?? I had actually forgot that I told him, weeks previously, that I would go. Btw, Cody is also the friend who spilled my surprise birthday arrival... Nice going, Cody.So. Needless to say, we were going skiing. After bundling up, drinking warm coffee, downing some liquid courage, and exchanging terrified glances, we were ready to hit the slopes. The bunny slopes, that is.We were falling all over ourselves. Poor Cody could not have picked worse students, nor could we have picked a better teacher. Even after fumbling and tumbling and losing a pole or two, he was patient with us. Be like Cody. The world deserves more people like Cody.Surprisingly, I got the hang of it. I really got the hang of it. I actually loved it. It was honestly, truly, one of the happiest days I've had in awhile. We ended up staying from 12-7, well through the Super Bowl. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the Super Bowl, but on that day, there was no place I'd rather be.After warming up some frigid fingers and toes, we wolfed down pizzas. All in all, a great day.Monday, the last day of my weekend getaway, was comprised of errands, classes for Kiva, and laughing too much. I ended up going to a fancy restaurant on 5th avenue that night with a good friend of mine, which ended up in even more laughs. So, that's my Anchorage weekend wrap up. Good food, great company, scary firsts, ridiculous ideas (like hopping on the first bus we see), too much wine, too little sleep, and not quite enough time with my favorite person. Love you bud, thanks for the experiences.
